The Award Ceremony of the BOCHK Science and Technology Innovation Prize (STIP) 2024 was successfully held on 16 December 2024, celebrating the remarkable achievements of this year’s laureates.

We are proud to share that Prof. Yang CHAI, a member of the Young Member Section (YMS), was awarded the prize in the Artificial Intelligence and Robotics category. Ir Dr Alex CHAN, President of the HKAE, also attended the ceremony to show his support and appreciation for the laureates’ contributions.

STIP is dedicated to promoting the advancement of science and technology innovation in Hong Kong, fostering a culture of excellence and inspiring future generations.

The Extraordinary General Meeting cum 31st Annual General Meeting was held on 9th December 2024 at the Private Dining Room I, Above and Beyond, 28/F, Hotel ICON.

The Hong Kong Engineering Science and Technology (HKEST) Award 2024-25 Briefing Session cum Distinguished Lectures was successfully held on 5 December 2024 at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

We were honoured to have Prof. Jinlian HU and Prof. Anderson Ho Cheung SHUM, recipients of the 15th Guanghua Engineering Science and Technology Prize (光華工程科技獎), share their remarkable achievements in the field of engineering technology and offer valuable insights to young talents in Hong Kong.

Ir Prof. JG TENG, Ir Dr Alex CHAN, Ir Prof. Christopher CHAO, Ir Prof. KM LUK and Ir Prof. Yuguo LI met with representatives of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, including Mr Yang ZHAO (趙陽) and Ms Ning DING (丁寧), on 4 December 2024 to discuss collaboration opportunities.

The HKAE TechTalk featuring Prof. LIU, Yunhui, Choh-Ming Li Professor of Mechanical and Automation Engineering and Director of T Stone Robotics Institute, CUHK; Director of Hong Kong Centre for Logistics Robotics, was held on 19 November 2024, from 4 pm to 5 pm, at The Tam Wing Fan Innovation Wing Two, HKU. Prof. LIU presented on “Vision-driven Robots: Challenges, Technologies and Applications”.

We were invited to attend the 18th meeting of the "Mainland/Hong Kong Science and Technology Co-operation Committee" (MHKSTCC) and the related visit programme, which took place from 11 to 13 November 2024 in Xi'an.

Ir. Dr Alex CHAN, Senior Vice President of HKAE, represented HKAE at the meeting.

The MHKSTCC meeting, co-chaired by the Vice Minister of Science and Technology and the Secretary for Innovation, Technology and Industry, is typically held annually to provide a platform for representatives from both sides to engage in direct exchanges and discussions on issues of mutual interest.

The HKAES TechTalk featuring Dr Justin CHUANG, Vice President, Communications Technologies, Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI), was held on 22 October 2024, from 4 pm to 5 pm, at The Tam Wing Fan Innovation Wing Two, HKU. Dr CHUANG presented on “Towards 6G: The Impacts of Wireless Communications Technologies Research to Society”.

Hong Kong Engineering Science and Technology Award Ceremony cum Distinguished Lectures was sucessfully held on 23 August 2024 at HJ305, 3/F, Core J, PolyU. Four local experts, Prof Mingxin HUANG (HKU), Ir Prof Yi-Chun LU (CUHK), Prof Tommy WEI (PolyU) and Prof Angus Yip (CityU) won the award. On the day, around 200 engineers, scholars, industry experts and leaders gathered physically and virtually to celebrate the event.

HKAES 116th Council Meeting cum Pitch Competition Award Ceremony was successfully held on 29th July 2024 at Victoria Suite, The Hong Kong Club. During the ceremony, we're honoured to have Ms. Lillian CHEONG, JP, Under Secretary for Innovation, Technology and Industry, HKSAR as our Guest of Honour, presenting the awards to the winning team from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

The HKAES TechTalk featuring Prof. Alfonso Ngan, Kingboard Professor in Materials Engineering, Chair Professor of Materials Science and Engineering, and Vice-President (Academic Development), HKU, was held on 26 June 2024, from 4 pm to 5 pm, at The Tam Wing Fan Innovation Wing Two, HKU. Prof. Ngan presented on “Metallurgical Issues in Water Supplies in Hong Kong”.

Professor C.C. Chan greeted the three winners of the 15th Guanghua Engineering Science and Technology Prize by the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), namely CHAN Ka Leung 陳家亮(CUHK), HU Jinlian 胡金蓮 (CityU HK), and SHUM Ho Cheung 岑浩璋 (HKU) after the presentation ceremony in Beijing on 25 June 2024.

Three nominees nominated by HKAES and being shortlisted to final round, include HU Jinlian 胡金蓮 (CityU HK), SHUM Ho Cheung 岑浩璋 (HKU), and LEE Shi-wei 李世瑋 (HKUST).

The HKAES TechTalk featuring Professor Vincent Kin Nang LAU, Chair Professor of Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering, Director and Founder of HKUST-Huawei Joint Lab, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, was held on 21 May 2024, from 4 pm to 5 pm, at The Tam Wing Fan Innovation Wing Two. Prof. Lau presented on “Integration of AI and Wireless Networks for 6G Systems”.

HKAES 115th Council Meeting was held on 29th April 2024 at the Private Dining Room I, Hotel ICON.

HKAES 2023-24 Pitch Competition on Grand Challenge Engineering Topics for University Students was held successfully on 13 April 2024. The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, with their project “EcoFlight: Enhancing Aircraft Ground Operations for Reduced Carbon Emissions” won the competition.

The HKAES TechTalk featuring Professor Jiannong Cao, Otto Poon Charitable Foundation Professor in Data Science, Chair Professor of Distributed and Mobile Computing, Director of RIAIoT, Director of UBDA, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, was held on 26 March 2024, from 4 pm to 5 pm, at The Tam Wing Fan Innovation Wing Two. Professor Cao presented on “Collaborative Edge Computing for Ubiquitous AI”.

The one-day tour to Shenzhen and Dongguan was conducted on 28 February 2024. The tour led by the President, Ir Prof. Jin-Guang Teng, was attended by 21 participants.

During the tour, the participants visited Guangming District Urban Planning Exhibition in Shenzhen to learn about the positioning and development of Guangming District. They were given a guided tour of the significant scientific infrastructure, such as the "Brain Analysis and Brain Simulation" and "Synthetic Biology Research" facilities, to explore the technological capabilities and potential of Guangming District.

In the afternoon, the delegation visited Huawei's campus in Dongguan, where they had the opportunity to engage in an in-depth panel discussion with the top leaders of Huawei. The discussion fostered a strategic connection between HKAES and Huawei and allowed participants to gain valuable insights from a representative enterprise contributing to the scientific and technological development of the Greater Bay Area.

The HKAES TechTalk featuring Professor Xiang-dong Li, Dean of Faculty of Construction and Environment (FCE) and Director of Research Institute for Sustainable Urban Development (RISUD), The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, was held on 20 February 2024, from 4 pm to 5 pm, at The Tam Wing Fan Innovation Wing Two. 

Professor Li is a renowned expert in the field of environmental science and technology. With his extensive research experience, he has made significant contributions to the study of regional environmental pollution, urban environment, and sustainable technology. His expertise includes analyzing the impacts of metal, organic, and emerging pollutants on human health and ecological systems. He delivered an insightful presentation on “How clean is the air we breathe in urban areas?"

The Distinguished Lectures by Guanghua Engineering Science and Technology Award (Guanghua Award) recipients, co-organized by the Hong Kong Academy of Engineering Sciences and the Policy Research Centre for Innovation and Technology of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU), will be held at PolyU on 15 November 2023 (Wednesday), 9:15 am - 12:00 noon. This series of Distinguished Lectures is part of the programme of the “Hong Kong Engineering Science and Technology Award 2023” under the General Support Fund scheme of the Innovation and Technology Commission. The HKAES TechTalk by Prof. Joseph Lee, President and Chair Professor, Macau University of Science and Technology, was held on 2 November 2023, from 4 pm to 5 pm, at The Tam Wing Fan Innovation Wing Two. HKAES 113th Council Meeting was held on 30th October 2023 at the Victoria Suite, The Hong Kong Club, Central.

The one-day tour to Shenzhen was successfully completed on 21 July 2023. The tour led by the President, Ir Prof. Jin-Guang Teng, was attended by 35 participants, including HKAES Fellows and the speakers/participants from the IBA Summit.

The participants visited Huawei Company's facility in Longgang, BYD Company's facility in Pingshan, Southern University of Science and Technology and its Cryo-EM Center in Nanshan to learn about the latest developments in technology and innovation in Shenzhen.

The delegation also met with Mr Qin Weizhong, the Mayor of the Shenzhen Municipal Government and other key governmental officials to gain valuable insights into Shenzhen's economic and social development and its role in the GBA. The program ended with a dinner hosted by the Federation of Guangdong Academicians (廣東院士聯合會) and their Fellows.

The 111th Council Meeting was held on 24th April 2023 at Bistro 1979, Basement 2, Hotel ICON.

The HKAES International Bay Area Summit 2023 is a 2-day high level conference with a theme on innovation, technology, entrepreneurship, and ecosystems aiming to explore ways of sustainable development of GBA. It will showcase a powerful line-up of speakers in the fields of advanced technologies, management, business and governance from New York, California and Tokyo Bay who will share with us their experience in development and operation of Bay Area economies under different technological, industrial and commercial environments. The Summit will enable participants to review the opportunities, challenges and cooperation between different Bay Area economies.

The Welcoming Dinner for New Fellows of 2018 was held on Tuesday, 29 January 2019 at the Hong Kong Club, Central, Hong Kong.

Mr Hugh CHOW, Chief Executive Officer of ASTRI, has kindly accepted the President’s invitation to attend the Academy Dinner and delivered a speech on “How the brightest minds collaborate to build an intelligent, connected and trusted Hong Kong”.

Prof. Daniel M. CHENG has kindly accepted the President’s invitation to attend the Academy Dinner as the Guest of Honour and to deliver a speech on “The Future of Engineering in HK – Industry 4.0 and Beyond 香港工程前景 – 工業4.0 +” to HKAES Fellows.

Prof. Cheng is currently the Chairman of Federation of Hong Kong Industries; Managing Director of Dunwell Enviro-Tech (Holdings) Ltd and also the President of Hong Kong Environmental Industry Association. He serves in many associations and Government Committees, and has played an advisory role in environmental protection policy & development areas in Hong Kong for over 15 years.

The Welcoming Dinner for New Fellows of 2016 was held on Monday, 16 January 2017 at the Hong Kong Club, Central, Hong Kong.

Dr Franklin Tong Fuk-kay has kindly accepted the President’s invitation to attend the Academy Dinner as the Guest of Honour and delivered a talk to Fellows. Dr Tong is the Chief Executive Officer of the Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute, Hong Kong, China. Dr Tong was a Professor at the Information Engineering Department of CUHK from 1996 to 2004. He currently serves as Adjunct Professor of the same Department. Fellows attended the Academy Dinner and exchanged views with Dr Franklin Tong Fuk-kay.

Mrs Fanny LAW FAN Chiu-fun has kindly accepted the President’s invitation to be the Guest of Honour of the Second Academy Dinner 2016. Mrs Fanny LAW is a member of the Executive Council of the Government of the HKSAR and the Chairman of the Hong Kong Science & Technology Parks Corporation. She delivered a speech at the Academy Dinner.

The Eleventh Guanghua Science and technology Award has concluded and two of the candidates nominated by HKAES have been honoured with this prestigious award. Prof. C C Chan, Fellow of HKAES and Prof. Patrick Yue, Professor of HKUST have won the“Engineering Award” and “Youth Award” respectively. The Executive Committee has decided to take the opportunity of this Second Academy Dinner to celebrate Prof. C C Chan’s success of being honoured with the Guanghua Science and Technology Award. To show his appreciation, Prof. Chan has kindly agreed to sponsor the dinner.

Fellows attended the Second Academy Dinner 2016 to exchange views with Mrs Fanny LAW on the development of innovation and technology industry in Hong Kong and to celebrate together with Prof. C C Chan his success of winning the Guanghua Award.

Prof. Tsui, Lap-Chee, the President of The Academy of Sciences of Hong Kong and the 14th Vice-Chancellor and President of The University of Hong Kong has kindly accepted the HKAES President’s invitation to be the Guest of Honour of The First Academy Dinner of 2016. Prof. Tsui  delivered a speech to the dinner. Fellows were encouraged to take the opportunity to exchange views with Prof. Tsui in this happy occasion.

The Welcoming Dinner for New Fellows of 2015 was held on Wednesday, 27 January 2016 at the Hong Kong Club, Central, Hong Kong.

Prof. Wei Shyy has kindly accepted the President’s invitation to be the speaker of the 3^rd Academy Dinner. Prof. Shyy is the Provost and Chair Professor of Mechanical Engineering of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. He has established world–wide reputation as an eminent researcher and educator in aerospace and mechanical engineering. Fellows are encouraged to join the dinner to share Prof. Wei’s interest and experience.

Mr. Nick Yang has been invited by the President’ to be the speaker as the Guest of Honour and delivered a talk to Fellows. Mr Yang was appointed as the Chief Executive Officer of the Hong Kong Cyberport Management Company Limited in 2003. He was the Executive Vice President of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University from 2010 to 2015. In March 2015, Mr Yang joined the Hong Kong SAR Government, serving as Advisor to the Chief Executive on Innovation and Technology, and Non-Official Member of the Executive Council.

Prof. Chow Wan Ki  has been invited by the President to be the speaker of this Academy Dinner. Prof. Chow is the Chair Professor of Fire Engineering and Head of the Department of Building Services Engineering of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Prof. Chow is also the Fellow of HKAES. Prof. Chow’s presentation was on“Fire Hazards to Watch in Big Dense Cities”.

The Welcoming Dinner for New Fellows of  2014 was held on Wednesday, 21 January 2015, from 7:30 pm to 9:30 pm at the Hong Kong Club, Central, Hong Kong.

Prof. Otto Lin attended the Euro-CASE 2014 Annual Conference on 2-3 December on behalf of HKAES and presented ”National Innovation Systems of the Greater China Region” at the conference.

Dr York Liao, SBS had kindly accepted the HKAES President’s invitation to be the Guest of Honour of the Academy Dinner and delivered a speech on “ Reflections on two decades of Innovation and Technology Initiatives in Hong Kong” in the dinner gathering. Dr York Liao, being a co-founder of Varitronix International Ltd in 1978, is a pioneering technology innovator and entrepreneur in Hong Kong. Having served or chaired in numerous government committees, he is also a prominent figure in the educational and innovation & technology sectors.

Guest of Honour: Ir. Paul Poon, Managing Director of CLP Power Hong Kong Ltd, attended the Academy Dinner as the Guest of Honour and gave a talk on “ Power Supply for Hong Kong “. 

A dinner meeting with Dr. Jacques LUKASIK of EURO-CASE was held on Thursday, 5 June 2014 at the Hong Kong Jockey Club to discuss the potential collaboration between HKAES and EURO-CASE. Dr. Jacques LUKASIK is the Secretary General of EURO-CASE (Association of all the Europeans Academies of Engineering and Technology) which is a very influential body. He is also a member of the National Academy of Technologies of France (NATF). The HKAES President, Prof. Y L CHOI together with Prof. Joseph Lee, Prof. J M KO, Ir. James Chiu and Prof. Jian LU attended the meeting which is found to be very fruitful.

Invited by Prof. Zhou Ji, the President of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), the HKAES Delegation, led by the President, Prof. Y L Choi, including Prof. Joseph H W Lee, Dr. Andrew Chan, Prof. Timothy Tong, Prof. C C Chan, Prof. J M Ko, Prof. Jian Lu, Ir. H S Kwong, Prof. Charles Ng and Prof. J G Teng visited Beijing from 1 – 4 June 2014. The Delegation attended the International Conference of Engineering Science and Technology 2014 (ICEST 2014) from 2 to 3 June and also attended as observers the Annual Council Meeting of CAETS 2014 on 4 June. The Delegation had meeting with Prof. Zhou Ji and his colleagues to discuss the enhancement of Collaboration between HKAES and CAE. The Delegation also took the opportunity to meet with other academies including HAE, NATF, NAE and RAE for strengthening the bilateral relationship during their stay in Beijing.

Guest of Honour: Ir C S Wai, Permanent Secretary for Development (Works) of the Development Bureau. He delivered a speech with a title “From Mountains to Molehills – Hong Kong Infrastructural Development Beyond 2030” and Sir Gordon Wu was the moderator for the Q & A session.

The Welcoming Dinner for New Fellows of 2013 was held on Monday, 17 February 2014, from 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm at the Hong Kong Club, Central, Hong Kong.

The 20th AGM was held on Monday, 16th December 2013, from 6:00 pm to 7:25 pm at the Hong Kong Club, Central, Hong Kong. Dinner followed immediately after the meeting at the same venue.

Prof. Robert Mair, Fellow of Royal Society and Royal Academy of Engineering, was invited to give a dinner talk to the Fellows of the Academy on 3 November 2011 at the Hong Kong Club, Central, Hong Kong . Prof. Mair is the Sir Kirby Laing Professor of Civil Engineering of the University of Cambridge. The title of his talk is “The Role of an Academy of Engineering in a knowledge economy”. The Hong Kong Academy of Engineering Sciences 3rd Distinguished Lecture was held on 18 June, 2011 at 10:00am in Chiang Chen Studio Theatre, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and presentation were given by Professor Timothy W. The Hong Kong Academy of Engineering Sciences 2nd Distinguished Lecture was successfully held on 6 November, 2010 at 9:30 am in Lecture Theatre, Hong Kong Central Library.
