Professor Ngan obtained PhD from Birmingham University, and after a year of postdoctoral training at Oxford University, he returned to the University of Hong Kong as a Lecturer in 1993, and was promoted through the ranks to his current position. His research focuses on the microstructural basis of mechanical properties of engineering materials. He won a number of research related awards including the Rosenhain Medal, a higher doctorate (DSc) from his alma mater Birmingham, and the Croucher Senior Research Fellowship. He has made important contributions on the mechanical behaviour of nano-scale materials and biological tissues and components.
